Fifteen years ago, Dr. Gerard Vernose had an idea about creating an event to celebrate local winemaking at harvest time (the Italian meaning of the word Vendemmia) – a personal hobby and passion handed down by his father and Italian-born grandfather, but he also wanted the celebration give something back to his childhood community. Hence the Vendemmia Foundation/Scholarship Program and annual Wine Festival were born.

The Vendemmia Foundation, now in it’s 21st fantastic season, is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to preserving Italian culture; to improving the understanding of Italian heritage and the art of winemaking; to fostering pride in community; and also to supporting the educational needs of students of Italian tradition in South Philadelphia. Over 300 local pupils have benefited from event profits through recent years.
Vendemmia is a fall festival for food and wine. It’s held every year for the past 16 years in south Philadelphia in late September or early october this years event will be held on Sunday September 29th. It’ll be held at Girard Park at 21st and Porter streets.

Admission fee for all this can be approx $50. All proceeds from the event support scholarships for kids from south Philadelphia IN.
